2010 Grantees

Arcadia Elementary – Kalamazoo, MI

Over a period of many years, music teacher Mary Foster has collected the skills and built the team of resources leading her to create “Drumagination”, an all-school drumming program, where students will build skills on a weekly basis in their general music classes then pour their expertise and joy to school and community events. Jubilation Foundation funds will help to purchase the instruments and pay for professional percussionists to work with the lucky students and committed teachers at Arcadia Elementary.

International Bluegrass Music Museum – Owensboro, KY
www.bluegrass-museum.org

Founded in 1991, the mission of the IBMM is to develop and maintain an environment in which people of all ages can discover the richness of bluegrass music. Funds from the Jubilation Foundation will support “Bluegrass in the Schools” project, which includes instruments and up to 8-day residencies in 23 fortunate schools in the area. Funds will also help support the energetic, foot-stompin’ Saturday classes at the Museum.

Capoeira Chicago – Chicago, IL
www.gingartecapoeira.org

The over arching goal of this group is to share and pass down the legacy and tradition of the art of capoeira – an historic mix of music and motion and courage – in the city of Chicago through inclusive, affordable, and accessible programming. Jubilation Foundation funds will strengthen the Capoeira outreach efforts, reaching and supporting children in underserved parts of the city, enabling new students to experience what it means to build confidence and strong bodies through muscles moving to rhythm, in a circle of fellow humans.

Dimensions Dance – Oakland, CA
www.dimensionsdance.org

Since 1972, Dimensions Dance has achieved recognition for its presentation of traditional African dances and other dance forms. Jubilation Foundation funds will support the Rights of Passage program, offering approximately 850 Oakland students year-round access to dance for joy and health, in school and out-of-school, drawing on the contagious energy of hip hop, West African dance, and tap.

Downtown Greens – Fredericksburg,VA
www.downtowngreens.org

The mission of Downtown Greens is to stimulate personal and community growth by involving individuals in a community garden – on 3 acres of land reclaimed from its former role as neighborhood dump! In effort to encourage environmental awareness and selfexpression, Downtown Greens created Marenje Marimba, a joyful local marimba band. Jubilation Foundation funds will go to their Summer Intensive Project, where they will partner with the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club and the local Step Team and seek to share and collaborate in their hard-won piece of paradise.

Enriching Lives Through Music – Larkspur, CA
www.enrichinglivesthroughmusic.org

This young and determined organization seeks to make high quality music education available to children who have a passion for music but lack access to instruments and teachers for music making at the entry level. Jubilation Foundation funds will help to build capacity for this organization to grow and thrive. A recent note from a student to the program’s founder said, “Dear Miss Jane, do you know I’m crazy about music and I don’t know why?”

Grandville Avenue Arts and Humanities, Inc. – Grand Rapids, MI
www.gaah.org

Since 1999, this organization has sought to transform lives in the Grandville Avenue neighborhood (where currently 95% of students from the area qualify for free or reduced lunch) through reading and the arts and by celebrating the area’s cultural richness. Jubilation Foundation funds will help Grandville Ave Arts and Humanities deliver its two 12-week and one 6-week after school programs in music and dance, as well as partner with a local folkloric dance troupe, bringing the good stuff to the kids in this community.

Only Make Believe, Inc. – New York, NY
www.onlymakebelieve.org

Only Make Believe creates and performs interactive theatre for children in hospitals and care facilities through 6-week series per facility. Jubilation Foundation funds will support its work in the Bronx-Lebanaon Child Study Center. They seek to help chronically ill children in the healing process to feel fully alive by filling hospital rooms with song, dance, movement, and laughter.

Walla Walla Symphony – Walla Walla, WA
www.wwsymphony.org

The oldest continuously operating orchestra west of the Mississippi is committed to staying with the times! Jubilation Foundation funds will be used for Taking It to the Kids and their Rock and Roll Camp, with the hope of expanding the camp’s instruments and expertise in world music music and dance.
